The Popular Organ - Choral adaptations for pipe organ in pop/jazz styles. By Dietmar Korthals .

From the preface:

"The idea to compose choral adaptations in jazz-related and popular styles for pipe organ is not new. For several decades there has been excellent, mainly jazz-oriented literature for this instrument. Still, the collection in this book is new in a certain way: For the first time, songs and chorals from the New Apostolic Hymnal form the foundation for adaptations in pop/jazz styles.The majority of the titles can be used ecumenically. Also, songs like "Wenn du in des Lebens Stürmen bist verzagt/Count Your Blessings" and "Wenn Friede mit Gott/When peace with the father" have been included; those might be lesser known within the major churches, but they belong to the repertoire that is being cultivated within the New Apostolic Church and many anglo-american religious communities.

The occasion for making this composition resulted from the task to prepare a solistic organ performance for a concert for young people. The piece should be framed by a choir program containing gospels and new spiritual songs. For this event, the adaptations  "Nun danket alle Gott", "Wenn du in des Lebens Stürmen bist verzagt" and "Welch ein Freund ist unser Jesus" were written, being originally performed on February 2, 2009 at the New Apostolic Church of Bremen-Sebaldsbrück. It then seemed to be clear to extend these adaptations to form a full concert program. This concert debuted on September 20, 2009 at the New Apostolic Church of Herford."
